Most bad vents here were never installed by a vent person. A builder's plumber or the appliance delivery crew ran whatever was in the truck. That is why so many 1950s-70s ranches still have original flexible foil or vinyl duct behind the dryer, crushed flat against the wall. On newer two-story subdivision homes the laundry sits upstairs, so the run goes 20-35 feet through the attic with two or more elbows and a roof cap. Nobody strapped it. It sags between joists and forms lint-trapping bellies.

A proper install is rigid metal duct, joints taped and not screwed. Screws catch lint. Elbows get counted and the run gets shortened where the framing allows. Attic duct should be supported close enough that it never bellies, and insulated where January cold fronts cause condensation inside the pipe.

Garage laundry corners and stacked interior closets in condos and townhomes are their own problem. Wall chases are shared and tight. A pedestal washer leaves inches of clearance, so we use a recessed vent box or a periscope instead of coiled flex.

Terminations matter most. Roof caps and sidewall hoods with fine bird or wasp screens pack with lint, cedar and oak pollen, and caliche dust. We fit a damper hood with a proper bird guard, not screen mesh.
